YEAR OF METEORS;  STEPHEN DOUGLAS, ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE ELECTION THAT BROUGHT ON THE CIVIL WAR by Douglas R. Egerton  Published by Bloomsbury Press, a 2010 printing; 399 pages has $29.99 price in DJ flap

Egerton tells the story of the dissolution of the Union as it should be told, not from the perspective of those looking back on the crisis but from the clouded vision of those who lived through it. He shows us men who often did not realize that the smallest steps taken could have dire consequences, and in the process, he captures the pettiness and the nobility, the wisdom and the recklessness of leaders too often hailed as heroes or dismissed as villains. Egerton's moving account of Stephen A. Douglas's journey from Lincoln's chief political rival to his supporter in the effort to preserve the Union brings home, as no other historian has done, the true meaning of patriotism. Anyone who wonders how the nation came to civil war should read this book."--Carol Berkin, Presidential Professor of History, Baruch College and the Graduate Center, CUNY, author ofA Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution"The harrowing political tale of 1860 has been lost to the legacy of the Civil War. InYear of MeteorsDoug Egerton takes us back to an important moment, from the untamed presidential election of 1860 to the first shots fired at Sumter, and brings it to life in a thrilling narrative. Here Abraham Lincoln emerged victorious from a derisive political fray to find Washington in shambles, its now famed white spire, despite decades of construction, was not much more than a pile of rubble. The same could be said of the nation as a whole. The Constitution had aged a little more than seventy years and suddenly, with the election of one man, the United States was in midst of a secession crisis. Whether covering the sights and sounds within the cavernous Wigwam, the Republican convention center built of pine--the loveliest fire trap yet devised by American architects'--or the transformation of Lincoln's famed rival Stephen Douglas into a diehard Unionist, or the Confederacy, a funhouse mirror image of the United States as a full-blown slave republic, Egerton is a master.Year of Meteorsreveals the fragility of the American political landscape, a place where politicians, no matter how hard they try, are unable to predict the future."--Scott Gac, Trinity College.
