Summary:

3          The Tombs of Atuan [Earthsea Cycle #2] (1970) - novel by Ursula K. Le Guin

“The main protagonist of The Tombs of Atuan is a young Kargish girl named Tenar. Because she was born as the previous high priestess of the Tombs of Atuan passed away, the Kargish believe that Tenar is the reincarnation of the priestess. (There are many high priestesses, and the priestess of the Tombs of Atuan is just one of them). Renamed Arha, which translates as “the eaten one,” Tenar is forcibly removed from her family at the age of five and conscripted into the society’s patriarchal upper caste known as the Nameless Ones. Though the house she is given to live in is tiny, Tenar’s status as the future priestess is very high in Kargish society. Meanwhile, a young eunuch named Manan becomes her eternal servant.
Although lonely, Tenar’s childhood is marked by friendship to some degree. She develops a very close bond with Manan, and another close bond with a fellow similarly aged priestess-in-training known as Penthe. The two priestesses charged with training Tenar are named Thar and Kossil. Thar is intensely stern but also fair. Kossil, on the other hand, is hateful and suspicious of Tenar’s growing power, and jealous of the esteem in which Tenar is held by the Nameless Ones. Through her training, Tenar learns to navigate the labyrinthine tunnels beneath the tombs, where it is said there is a highly valuable treasure that “evil” sorcerers of Hardic descent have sought for years. Part of Tenar’s duty as high priestess is to protect this treasure.
Another far more unsettling duty that Tenar must carry out is sentencing prisoners to die in the tombs. The culture’s preferred method of capital punishment is starvation, which amounts to a long, slow torture. Tenar is haunted by her role in sentencing individuals to such pain and torment.”

To Prospective Buyers….

Please see my profile ‘page’ for important announcements (if any). Thank you.

This update is dated 06 October 2023.

Checkout Instructions.

Note 1:

Royal Mail is used for delivery and all postage rates shown (on this listing) are based on their increase in rates as of 02 October 2023.

UK rates should be accurate for the item(s) advertised (on this listing), including the cost for loss or damage of the item(s). Standard compensation for items posted within the UK is only up to £20…Note that this covers the Purchase Price and not what the Buyer thinks the item might be worth! Postage quoted when multiple items are purchased will be calculated based on the weight and value of the ‘bundle’ (please also see Note 2 below). For multiples, I will wait and combine them when you have finished ‘shopping’ (see Note 3 for more information). Simply add them to the basket and then request an invoice.

All Customers please note:

v  In February 2021 a valuable hardcover was damaged in the post (the dustjacket was torn by a few inches, thus de-valuing the item) and, needless to say perhaps, the customer was not too well pleased. The item was insured for up to £1000 and I raised a claim for £250, the cost of a professional repair. Photographs were provided as part of the claim process (before and after the damage), however this was to no avail. Royal Mail would not pay for the damages because the packaging was not kept by the customer. Although this has only happened to me a couple of times, in all the years I have been selling my collection, the message is absolutely clear. If you receive an item that looks damaged, please photograph it immediately before opening. Then open the package carefully and keep it [the packaging] to one side. If the contents are intact and as described on the listing then all is well. If however there is damage to the item then please [also] take pictures of that. Contact me immediately and I will take it from there (i.e. raise a claim) once you have provided the relevant evidence. Put the item and its packaging safely to one side for further examination as appropriate.

v  On multiple (combined) purchases please, please use the Shopping Basket and request an invoice….do NOT pay at checkout. I can then apply the correct Postage & Packing (P&P) amounts to the invoice. In fact, if in any doubt that the P&P is not correct for your situation please request an invoice. It saves a lot of time and trouble for both of us!

International Customers please note:

Please note that I will post worldwide. However, I am only able to show 4 International rates (Royal Mail Tracked) on my listings and cannot cater for every weight, postage method and eventuality. They are generally as follows:

> Europe - is now (from April 2022) split into 3 Zones and the highest priced Zone is shown on every listing

> World Zone 1 - Asia, Africa, North & South America (excl. USA)

> World Zone 2 - Oceania (incl. Singapore)

> World Zone 3 - USA

Therefore, please ask for an invoice (also see Note 2).

Standard compensation for items posted internationally is only up to £50…Note that this covers the Purchase Price and not what the Buyer thinks the item might be worth! Any purchase cost greater than this will incur the additional ‘insurance’ cost.

If you have any questions at all, please contact me and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you very much.

Note 2:

As may be appreciated some of the items I am selling are very scarce, because of their age or because they are Limited and/or Signed Editions, etc., and many are also quite valuable/costly. As a Private Seller I am unable to refund the cost of any loss or damage out of my own pocket; thus the Postage quoted always includes the compensation charges (as listed by the courier).

However, I do appreciate that the cost of postage is high (and getting more costly as time goes by!) and will send items by Standard Post (UK) or International Standard if requested. BUT…I will ask that the Buyer sends me written confirmation that they will not claim from me in the event of loss or damage. Thank you for your understanding on this point.

If you have any questions on the above, or anything to do with my listings, please contact me. I am generally available Monday through Friday and will answer soonest.

Note 3: Yes, I will combine items to optimise postage costs.

I am always happy to do multiple purchases with combined postage. Please follow these steps; otherwise you will end up paying the P&P on all items:

> Click on the 'Add to basket' button and not the 'Buy it now'. A separate ‘window’ will pop up after each selection. Click on “See all” at the foot of the window to return to listings and continue shopping.

> On completing your selections click on 'Go to basket', do not use the 'Checkout n items' - this is important. You are now on a window which allows you to review all items (with the total amounts), remove items or even continue shopping again.

> Finally, do not use the “Go to checkout” button or you will end up paying the entire bill. At the top of the list of items you should find “Request total”, click on that and wait for me to send you an invoice with the correct P&P amount (this will include the appropriate loss or damage cover for the shipment). As far as I am aware this will also work for a single item and this is where you would ask for an invoice with P&P for your particular situation (country, cover, etc.).

The important thing is to communicate your intentions so we can agree on the protocol for your specific situation (always within the site rules abiding at the time). I have various sizes of cardboard and mail-lite envelopes, a couple of different size of cardboard boxes, etc.; along with various and many packing materials!!

General: Please know that I am a private seller listing my book collection from over 60 years and of many thousands of items. The books and magazines are the genuine article as described in the listings and I try to be as detailed as I can about the condition of each item (I err on the side of caution). If you have any questions on the above, or anything to do with my listings, please contact me. I am generally available Monday through Friday and will answer honestly and to the best of my ability.

Thank you for your attention and happy browsing.
