On the 8th In August 1944, Michael Wittmann was involved in a battle with a group of 5 Sherman Firefly tanks near Cintheaux, between Caen and Falaise. Ultimately, the superiority was too great and he fell in the battle, having previously destroyed 2 of the enemy tanks and disabled one. None of Wittmann's crew survived and he was buried with them in a community cemetery in Hamlet of Gaumesnil. A week later, the Allies closed the Falaise pocket and trapped the German troops there.
