Kristen Liu-Wong’s paintings fuse psychedelic colors with bawdy scenes that envision a bacchanalia of modern life. A BFA graduate of Pratt Institute, Liu-Wong has earned acclaim for her maximalist portraits, which are erotic and provocative, often to unsettling effect. She moved to Los Angeles in 2015, where she rose to prominence for her freelance and commercial work and gathered more than 196,000 fans on Instagram. Imaginative in their narratives, Liu-Wong’s compositions reference Japanese shunga, American folk art, cartoons from her childhood, and ancient Greek and Roman pottery and mythology. Her scenes are packed with sexual and violence action, and dance between raw feelings of pleasure and aggression.
