Vintage 26 in. Disston No. 12 crosscut saw with
nib, filed 7 P.P.I. Despite its age, this saw has apparently not seen a lot of
use. The blade, which has recently been sharpened, is not only straight and in
reasonably good joint, the plate is near its original full width, measuring 7⅛
in. at the heel, 3 ¼ in. just above the nib, and 2 ½ in. at the toe. The handle
has a shortened top horn, but is otherwise in good condition, tight to the
blade, and bears the 1896-1917 “Disston & Sons Philada” medallion. There is
a bit of pitting and tarnishing on the blade, and the etch is only partially
legible. These blemishes do not affect this saw’s performance, however. It is a
brute. With its slightly coarse 7-point filing and a decent amount of set, this
saw is best suited for cutting green lumber. It can also be used for cutting up
branches and small logs for firewood. While it will also easily chomp through
dry lumber, the cut will be rougher.
