In 1925 the "Sociedad de Casas Baratas S.A." was born, with Gonzalo Iglesias, architect, among others, appearing as founders; Rafael Benjumea Burín, Count of Guadalhorce; Fernando Loring, engineer and Manuel Giménez Lombardo, civil engineer. The latter was the one who drafted the first complete defense plan for Malaga against the Guadalmedina floods and built the "Pantano del Agujero".

The advisor was Jorge Silvela Loring, the vice advisor was the aforementioned Count of Guadalhorce, the secretary was assumed by Francisco Giménez Lombardo and the members were Manuel Álvarez Net, Fernando Loring Martínez, Joaquín Benjumea Burín, Manuel Giménez Lombardo and Francisco Giménez Lombardo (Count of the Gaitanes). In later years the positions changed between them, so Sociedad da Casas Baratas S.A. It was, as can be seen from the surnames, social ranks and moment in which it was created, a kind of clan of the Malaga bourgeoisie whose ultimate goal was none other than economic.

Despite all the problems that accompanied the Society, its project and its members, it remained active until 1961 when it was dissolved.

--------------------
The origin of Ciudad Jardín as a neighborhood dates back to the first third of the last 20th century. Here are presented, in chronological order, some events, places and dates that in one way or another are the brief history of this area of Malaga.

In 1911, a law called the cheap houses law was enacted, which was later modified in 1921, becoming the first attempt to solve the pressing problem of popular housing, that is, the regulation for the construction of economic neighborhoods, designed Designed in theory as autonomous satellite cities with regard to their own collective services, with minimum hygiene guarantees and always seeking proximity to major communication arteries or large work centers.

Jorge Silvela Avenue in 1932

It was in 1922 when a group of Malaga councilors presented a motion requesting the construction of 500 cheap houses under the aforementioned law.

The architect Mr. Gonzalo Iglesias presented the Ciudad Jardín project in 1924, with the title "Project of cheap houses for Málaga", being mentored by Mr. Fernando Loring Martínez and Mr. Leopoldo Werner.

The name Garden City was not exclusive nor the result of an inspiration of the time, there were many neighborhoods in Spanish geography with this name, since these projects of individual houses, with orchards or gardens associated with them, were called garden cities.

In the same year, 1924, the transfer and division of land took place.

However, this Society caused, as mentioned in another section of this page, that the Ciudad Jardín neighborhood was born as what it is and ceased to be an area of orchards north of Malaga known as Guadalmedina.

The beneficiaries of these homes would be the employees of the Sociedad Malagueña de Tranvías, Hidroeléctrica del Chorro, Ferrocarriles Andaluces, Tabacalera, etc.

Press clipping

In 1926 the first house was delivered. The event took place on February 11 and was attended by SS. MM. Kings Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia. The monarch was given the keys to the first house, and in turn he gave them to the mayor, the famous Dr. Gálvez Ginachero, so that he could award the house to a worker from Malaga.

In the book "The Garden City, much earlier", by Rafael Soto Salido, its author indicates that this house was awarded to Dª Remedios Jurado Salas, widow of Commander D. Justo Sierra, who died in the war in Morocco and that it corresponds to the number 32 Jorge Silvela Avenue. Currently it must have changed its number, since I have asked in the aforementioned place and they have not confirmed the fact.

These houses are known, for this reason, as "the King's houses".

On the right you can see a clipping from the newspaper "La Unión Mercantil" from February 12, 1926 that echoed the event.

In addition to the one mentioned, other houses were transferred in the same act, which were transferred to the following positions or organizations:

-seven to the governor, for the army and navy
-seven to the City Council
-four to the bishopric
-three to the Provincial Council
-one to the president of the Military Directorate, Miguel Primo de Rivera
Along with this type of housing, 6 collective homes were built, whose characteristics were also contemplated in the aforementioned "cheap houses law." Each collective is surrounded by a group of houses that form a block, and these houses are of the same style as the collective they surround. This is true in the first five, with the sixth being the largest and forms a block in itself, without houses around it. Each group of houses was built almost at the same time, as a single piece. The neighborhood was growing towards the north of the city at a rapid pace. In the old images section there is a photograph provided by the Garden City District Board
