FROM MADEIRA WITH LOVE....!

 

Found in an estate liquidation on the island of Madeira in Portugal, that of a retired antiques dealer.

Discovered in a bookcase being used as a safe for personal documents.

A wooden book shaped sleeve or box that has silver toned metal stampings as decoration.  

The book shaped sleeve is finished much like furniture.  

The thin silver metal stampings are not hallmarked and are paper thin.  They are all present.  

The main decorative element is a warm silvery toned metal stamping of the S. Miguel, a famous Portuguese Caravel (Masted Ship), often seen only in antiquity.

The exterior measurements as follows;

9 1/2 inches by 7 1/4 inches, 2 1/4 inches thick.  

The interior measurements are 8 1/2 inches by 6 3/4 inches, 1 3/4 inch opening.  

I inserted a standard size playing card in one photo as a reference for size.

No cracks or distortions, no missing elements.  The piece has a varnished finish, like fine furniture.

From years of normal handling, it has some visible scuffs and scratches, however, nothing to a fault.
