Mid 16th Century Sukhothai Tukatha Figurine - Pa Yang Kilns, Si Satchanalai, Thailand

Discover an alluring piece of Thai heritage with this Tukatha (tuton sia kaborn or tukata sia kaban) stoneware figure from the mid 16th century, originating from the Sukhothai province's Si Satchanalai, Pa Yang kilns. This exquisite stoneware figure, depicting a young mother seated in the traditional Thai position of honouring, with both feet pointing behind, cradling a baby in its arms, encapsulates the essence of maternity and the nurturing spirit.

Originally designed as a toy to teach girls about motherhood, these maternity figurines played a significant role in rain and fertility ceremonies. Crafted during the vibrant period of Sawankhalok/Si Satchanalai ceramic production, this figurine exemplifies the artistry that flourished in the heart of one of Southeast Asia's largest ceramic-producing centres.

Provenance: German private collection

Condition: Good, with age-related wear. The figurine's head has been broken and later re-attached, a common trait that hints at both the figurine's historical significance and its delicate craftsmanship.

Measurements: 110mm x 53mm x 45mm
