Medal: In Commemoration of the 500th Anniversary of the Birth of Nicolaus Copernicus

"This medallic First Day Cover commemorates the 500th anniversary of the birth of the great Polish astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus, who proved that the planets orbit the sun. The 8-cent stamp, designed by Alvin Eisenman of Bethany, Connecticut, is based on an 18th century engraving. The solid sterling silver First Edition Proof medal shows a page from Copernicus's book, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, and a model of the solar system. The medal was sculptured by Vincent Miller and minted at the Franklin Mint."
