Oil Painting Sprowston Mill Mousehold Norwich by Geoffrey Mortimer 1895-1986

‘Cromes’ Sprowston Mill as viewed from Mousehold Heath

Cromes Mill was built in 1780 at a cost of £2,000.00 (quite a large sum in those days, perhaps to include outbuildings) It was more commonly known as Sprowston Post Mill and is one of the best documented mills within the Eastern counties.
It is well worth taking some time to research the fascinating history, sadly the mill burnt down in 1933, just before it was due to be handed over to the archaeological trust.

Well painted showing the mill against a typical Norfolk sky, with gorse in the foreground.
Oil on board, signed lower left, presented within a gilt frame. Pen inscription verso, painting on George Rowney of London art board.

Condition: Small unfinished area to the upper centre as photographed. A darker scene as were many painted by Geoffrey Mortimer, a result of the old paints that were used.

A wonderful part of Norwich’s history

Geoffrey Mortimer 1895-1986 was active at the same time as Sir Alfred Munnings and painted  in the same areas of East Anglia so it is no surprise that his works bear more than a passing similarity to Munnings. This painting is larger than most, signed lower left and presented within a later gilt gesso frame. Oil on board, in good condition.
