King Leonidas I (c. 540 - 480 BC) was a Spartan warrior king known for his leadership and bravery during the Greco-Persian Wars, particularly the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. He ruled the Greek city-state of Sparta from around 490 BC until his death in battle. Leonidas is remembered as a symbol of courage, strength, and resistance against overwhelming odds, as he led a small army of 300 Spartan soldiers and 7,000 Greek allies against the massive Persian forces, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, under the rule of King Xerxes I. Although ultimately defeated, Leonidas and his warriors faced the Persians with great valor, inflicting significant casualties and delaying their advance long enough to allow the Greek city-states to better prepare for subsequent battles
