Bemerkungen
Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Hosoban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) This print dates stylistically to the Meiwa era (1764-1771) and is typical of Buncho's finest work. According to Teruji Yoshida, the artist has depicted Onoe Matsusuke as Tsutaya Omatsu in Mutsu Chidori Meika no Yumitori (The Archer of the Famous Poems on the Northern Plover), staged at the Morita-za in November, 1768. Kabuki Nempyo (Kabuki Yearbook) records that Matsusuke played in the role of Omatsu of the Tsutaya, a frivolous woman, and en-acted a scene standing in a rush-roofed boat at Ikkoku Bridge. Onoe Matsusuke, who made his stage debut as a child actor at the Ichimura-za in November, 1755, was listed as an actor of young-girl roles in 1762, and as a player of young female roles in 1764. He advanced steadily in popularity and actor rating but, due to steadily increasing weight, abandoned female impersonations in 1770 in favor of playing male leads - especially roles of villains. He lived until 1815.
