A good and very clean copy. - Abstract: It is shown that David Malament’s (1977) proof of the uniqueness of the Poincaré-Einstein convention for defining simultaneity involves an unwarranted physical assumption. Once that assumption is removed, his other criteria for simultaneity are satisfied by membership in the same forward (backward) null cone of the family of such cones with vertices on an inertial path. What is unique about the Poincaré-Einstein convention is that it is independent of the choice of an inertial path in a given inertial frame. This confirms a remark made by Einstein in 1905. - Wikipedia: Sahotra Sarkar (born 1962) is an Indian-American professor at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in the philosophy of biology. - John Stachel (born 29 March 1928) is an American physicist and philosopher of science.
