Bemerkungen
Leaflet slightly bumped at the lower edge in the fold, art print very good. Text in Japanese and English. - Oban Nishikie - (Important Art Object) Eishô was active as a follower of Hosoda (Chobunsai) Eishi during the Kansei era (1789-1800), when Utamaro's influence on print designing in Edo was at its peak. In this series of bust portraits of courtesans, Eisho, while he designed bold compositions to fill the entire format, maintained much of the aristocratic tone of his teacher. The courtesan Midorigi is depicted as a lovely young girl, stroking a china bull charm. The massed black hair, white skin and colorful textile patterns in red and purple are made to stand out forcefully against a ground of grey with a vine pattern reserved in white. As the title implies, there were issued a series of these portraits, which seem to have been extremely popular, judging from the number extant.
