Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - The seemingly curious title — "Architectural Library" — is ambiguous. It primarily refers to collecting buildings, in the literal sense, which is an expensive and time-consuming process feasible in the 18th — 19th centuries only for monarchs in times of peace and prosperity. The notion of "collecting architecture" embraced paper matters as well: books on architecture, architectural projects, drawings, engravings. The architectural library of Catherine II, for example, even though not comprehensive, comprised at least several thousands of books and print albums. "Architectural Library" develops the architectural line of "Hermitage 20/21" Project for contemporary art. Juxtaposed here are drawings borrowed from collections of different types: the living and growing collection of a practicing architect Sergei Tchoban started by him slightly more than a decade ago and the old imperial collection dating back to the acquisitions of Catherine II. The exhibition presents works of art frôm both collections: well-known pieces as well as those exhibited and published for the first time. Among the latter are architectural sketches by Berto di San Sepolcro, a unique composition ascribed to Jean Gougeon, the legendary project of the Jesuit Theatre in the Collège Louis-le-Grand created under Jacques-François Blondel II. The exhibition is arranged according to the principle of dialogue between the two collections. The present catalogue reveals the same approach. Drawings are grouped in pairs in it: works attributed to one and the same architect (two drawings by Jean-François Thomas de Thomon, two works by Charles-Louis Clerisseau), works on one and the same subject or indirectly supplementing each other developing a similar idea in different ways. Such is the case with two monuments from the epoch of the French revolution: the Gallic Hercules by Ennemond-Alexandre Petitot and the draft of the monument on the ruins of the Bastille by Armand-Parfait Prieur. The "enlightened fantasy" created by Jean-Laurent Le Geay echoes the sketch of the column by Berto di San Sepolcro. The dialogue allows to draw parallels through the ages and styles of architecture where the architectural fantasy of Daniel Llbeskind in its noble fancifulness and inward musicality appears to be surprisingly consonant with the design of the fountain by Nicolas Pineau.
