Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. - The spheroconic vessels are a specific type of Islamic ceramic vessels which can be dated from the 9th to the 14th centuries. Their function and the origin of their shape were contradictory discussed in a considerable number of publications. They are considered to be: - "Arabic bombs", filled with naphta, - mercury containers, - aeolipiles, fire-blowers for ceramic production, - drinking vessels, and - flacons with different contents which could have been used in nomadic environs against insects too. The vessel published here is a "flacon". It was used to keep oil of roses as a analysis in the laboratories of the Landesmuseum Zürich proved. As far as the shape is concerned, it seems quite plausible to see its origin in Sasanian metal- or glass work. The best parallel is found on a partially gilded Sasanian or Sasanian influenced silver ewer. Here Anahita holds in one hand a small vessel. With its small opening in the upper part, its pointed base and its chased ornaments it looks like spheroconic vessel. Thus, I think the goddess Anahita is carrying an oil of roses vessel which might be the prototype of the Islamic spheroconic vessels.
