Gebraucht, aber sehr gut erhalten. - Bridger's publications prior to 1892 Bridger's treatise on depressions forms a link in a series of publications, all of which actually have the same basic theme: the impaired digestion and the physical and psychic disorders resulting from this condition. Viewed from this perspective, the book presented here constitutes the end of a period in general literature about depressions, in which melancholy was considered a disorder of the balance of the four bodily fluids, caused by an excess of black bite. At the same time, the book marks the transition to the new outlook on depressions as a disorder of various neurological and psychic processes. Bridger's series of publications about impaired digestion started in 1880 with his dissertation on typhoid fever and was continued in 1887 with the popular-scientific treatise entitled Biliousness; its causes and its rational treatment. According to Bridger, biliousness is 'the commonest and the most troublesome of all functional derangements', even though virtually no one has published anything about it. He lectures his readers at length on the physiology of digestion and the broad spectrum of disorders resultant from any dysfunction of this system. As we shall see later, ample attention is also given to depressions. Whenever the subject of therapy arises, Bridger appears quite willing to discuss the value of new, sometimes risky drugs and other therapeutic remedies. For example, he reports on his experiences with the use of electricity in treating gastrointestinal disorders, the use of mercury compounds and particularly ammonium chloride 'administered by means of a spray or an atomiser'. The book, of which apparently a few thousand copies were sold, concludes with an 'Appendix of Cases'. (S. 11)
