Description:  It is an authentic antique copper engraved print approximately 179 years old with original handcoloring as issued from Comte de Lacepede's Oeuvres de Comte de Lacepede, L'Histoire Naturelle des Quadrupedes Ovipares, des serpents, des poissons et des Cetaces, published by Chez Abel Ledoux, Paris, 1845, a copy of the title page is included. It is being sold as a single sheet, not mounted, matted, nor framed. Overall a miniature sized print with beautiful watercolor and gum arabic color that gives the body of the animal a nice sheen.

Bernard-Germain de Lacépède (1756-1825), French Naturalist and Senator, considered the heir of Comte de Buffon's Histoire naturelle. He contributed to the Transformist theory of nature that species slowly changed over time, loosely based on Darwinian theory of the era. His early career was spent working with Buffon and contributing to Buffon's Histoire naturelle, as well as completing and publishing Buffon's final version after his mentor's death. It was very popular and various volumes were published in many editions in various languages: it was certainly one of the earliest and most complete field guides to animals based on scientific classification based on Carl Linnaeus. Toward's the end of Lacepede's life he compiled his final Oeuvres de Comte de Lacepede, which were gradually first published posthumously from 1825-36 as supplements. This print is from the 1845 edition, known for it's superb color of watercolor and gum arabic. 

Size: The full sheet measures 5 1/2 by 9 inches (14x22cm)

Condition: Fair to Good condition for its age, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy page with original handcoloring and gum arabic. There is some ageing and a few minor spots, very rich gum arabic handcolor as issued, see the pics for more on condition of the actual print.
