Einband leicht berieben. - Inness was a complicated, thoughtful artist. He welcomed influences, and his art underwent dramatic perturbations. Successively, sometimes almost simultaneously, it took different forms. What underlies its changeableness and, as a will to renovation, partly explains it, is modernity. It was expressed in his earliest works mostly as intention and in his later works more openly as appearance. It was expressed by discernibly modern subject matter, what Inness called "civilized landscape,"1 and simply by an attraction to newness. Whether as instinct, sensibility, idea, or conviction, modernity is the unifying principle of Inness's artistic enterprise. ISBN 0875871240
