The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco houses the immense Avery Brundage collection, deeded to the city in 1959. While it includes representative works of every Asian and Near Eastern country, the Brundage collection is known primarily for its Chinese section and for its Buddhist sculptures from China, Japan, India and South-east Asia. The Achenbach collection, donated to the city of San Francisco in 1948 and housed in the Palace of the Legion of Honor, has one of the most important collections of Asian—particularly Japanese—prints and drawings in the United States. The collections of two university museums are also represented : The Stanford University Museum, opened in 1892, and the University Art Museum of the University of California at Berkeley, the largest university art museum in the world.
