Einband berieben und bestossen, papierbedingt gebräunt. - Psycho-infantilism is a condition often encountered in psychiatric practice. Some time ago I made a comparison of the results in two different intelligence tests in over a thousand cases from the Psychiatric Clinic of the Sahlgren Hospital in Gothenburg. During this study I was struck by a peculiar type of immaturity shown by some of the patients. These patients behaved in an abnormally childish and primitive manner though they generally exhibited no intellectual defect either in the intelligence tests or at school. Later on during psychiatric examinations of maladjusted military recruits I came across several more examples of this type of personality. In addition to other signs of mental insufficiency, these persons all displayed distinctly »childish» features, and many of them were characterized as »psycho-infantile» in the records and reports. The term »psycho-infantile» has been used in our records to cover a fairly vague concept and to express the examiner's more or less intuitive perception of something abnormally immature, childish or infantile in the patient. However, as a few more cases of this kind cropped up every year I undertook the present study1) in order to try to clear up the concept of psycho-infantilism and if possible to determine the extent to which psycho-infantilism may be regarded as a clinical entity.
