The book consists of sixteen historical, philological, and palaeographical studies that deal with two major problems confronting Charlemagne in the late eighth century. The first problem was the decree of the Council of II Nicaea of 787 reestablishing the worship of images, a decision rejected by Charlemagne through the Libri Carolini (which Professor Wallach regards as a work written by the Anglo-Saxon Alcuin for the Frankish king). The other problem was his relationship to the papacy at Rome, which led, finally, to his being recognized as the Emperor of the Latin West in 800. Professor Wallach divides his book into four parts. The first part investigates the involved textual transmission of Pope Hadrian's Synodica of 785, a document whose testimonia of image-worship are discussed and questioned in the Libri Carolini. Part II shows how newly discovered sources used in the Libri Carolini determine the text recension of Professor Wallach's forthcoming critical edition of the work. Part III adduces many sources recently brought to light that, the author argues, disprove decisively the claim that Theodulph of Orléans wrote the Libri Carolini. Part IV exposes as a forgery the famous document known for centuries as Pope Leo III's oath of purgation. (Verlagstext). ISBN 0801410193
