KAWS TOKYO FIRST, the first major exhibition of rare artist KAWS in Japan, was held in Tokyo in 2021. This puzzle was sold exclusively at this exhibition.

KAWS (Brian Donnelly) was born in 1974. After emerging as a graffiti artist in the early 1990s, he studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has a strong connection with Japan, and came to Japan in 1997, where he was exposed to Tokyo's subculture and participated in street art projects. 2019 saw the much-talked-about 'KAWS: HOLIDAY JAPAN' at the foot of Mt Fuji.

KAWS has created works full of wit and love, inspired by pop culture animation works, especially his colourful character pieces, which have become synonymous with the artist. The characters KAWS hybridises into giant sculptures and paintings with an emphasis on line and colour embody KAWS's ongoing exploration of 'human nature'.

KAWS has also collaborated with famous fashion brands such as UNIQLO and Abasing Ape, as well as global brands such as Dior, and his sophisticated and humorous works are loved by a wide range of people.

The exhibition 'KAWS TOKYO FIRST', which brought together over 150 works, explored KAWS's visual approach, which encompassed both the realms of commercial art and fine art. Through paintings, statues and products from his early to latest works, the exhibition traced the trajectory of his unique artistic production and its significance in art history.

The exhibition title "KAWS TOKYO FIRST" is the same as the title of his first solo exhibition in Japan, which was held at Shibuya PARCO in 2001, and expresses the idea of "returning to his roots" 20 years later.
