"The Jazz Singer" (1925)
by Samson Raphaelson
This is a 1925 copy of "The Jazz Singer," the play that became the first talkie, starring Al Jolson.
This copy was owned by Rabbi Abraham E. Millgram, author of many popular books on Jewish life in America. In 1925, Millgram was studying at Columbia.
A gift inscription reads,
To Abraham E. Millgram
In grateful remembrance
of your excellent address, from
a friend of your and your
people,
John E. Griffith
The book is in good condition, with the exception of cracked hinges front and back (see photos). It has no dust jacket. The paper label on the spine is present and legible. The pages themselves are in good shape. Pages 83-85 have a little imperfection in the bottom corner, but all the paper is quite thick and rustic, so it is not clear whether that is a tear or just a variation in the rough-cut paper (see photo). Text is clean and complete.
An original piece of theatre, cinema, and Jewish-American history.
