About the Author Yoshitomo Nara Born in 1959 in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, and grew up in the midst of the high economic growth period. After graduating from high school and studying art in Tokyo and Aichi, he studied abroad at the German National Academy of Fine Arts Düsseldorf for six years because tuition was free. He continued working as an artist in Cologne for another six years, but returned to Japan in the fall of 2000 when his studio was demolished. Until 2005, he worked in the suburbs of Tokyo, but moved to Tochigi Prefecture because land was cheap. In 2009, the police caught him while doing graffiti in a New York subway station and put him in jail. Nevertheless, in 2010, he became the first Japanese to receive the New York International Center Award, which honors foreigners who have contributed to American culture. Currently, he spends his days producing and enjoying hot springs.
