Welcome to Antique Poster Shop

The poster is one of the most lively and, at the same time, the most complex areas in graphic design, in art. The Soviet poster is a truly unique phenomenon, and in different years the authors of famous posters were outstanding Soviet artists, leading people of their time.

The best artists of their time worked on propaganda posters, famous poets wrote slogans - thus, unique graphic schools were formed. Nowhere in the world did they teach the poster purposefully and systematically, as it was in the USSR.

Rare Soviet posters today have to be searched for in different countries of the world. It's a paradox, but what was created in only a few copies and is known only to collectors is sometimes easier to find than what was produced in thousands of copies. Of the millions of campaign posters that have adorned the streets, classrooms, classrooms and hospital corridors for many decades, only a few have survived.

Posters of the Soviet era are not only original works of graphic art, antiques and antique graphics, original retro gifts and interior items, but also truly historical documents

This is an excellent example for a propaganda museum or home collection.

The poster was created by the most famous poster artist of the Soviet Union

Ivanov Viktor Semenovich (1909–1968)

Biography

Outstanding Soviet poster artist, painter, film artist. Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1955). Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1958). Awarded USSR State Prizes (1946, 1949). He is best known as a master of political posters. During his life he created more than 300 works on various topics, many of which were included in the golden fund of Soviet posters.

Viktor Semenovich Ivanov studied at the Moscow Isotechnical School (1926), the Moscow Isotechnicum in Memory of 1905 (1926–1929) with E. N. Yakub, at the studio of D. N. Kardovsky in Moscow (1928–1929), in 1933 he graduated from the Leningrad Film Department INGSA, majoring in production design, studied with M. P. Bobyshov, B. V. Dubrovsky-Eschke. In the 1930s, artist Viktor Ivanov collaborated with Lenfilm. Since 1933, he designed films at the Mosfilm and Mezhrabpomfilm studios: “Honor” by E. V. Chervyakov (1938), “Lenin in 1918” by M. I. Romm (1939, together with Dubrovsky-Eschke), “ The Guy from Taiga" by O. I. Preobrazhenskaya, I. K. Pravov (1941), "The Road of Immortality" (1957). Since the mid-1930s he lived and worked in Moscow, and since 1934 he has taken part in many major exhibitions. He was mainly involved in propaganda, political and social posters. In the pre-war years he made about two dozen posters.

The main early posters: “Let’s raise healthy young animals” (1935), “Let’s master the great theory of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin!” (1935), “Let's win world sports records!” (1937), “Slaves Unbend Their Backs” (1938), “Warmed by the Stalinist sun, we go, full of courage. Make way for the cheerful pets of the great Soviet country!” (1938), “Lending a helping hand to the fraternal peoples of Western Ukraine and Western Belarus is our sacred duty,” “The slogan of the national war is passed from mouth to mouth: “A father will fall in battle, a son will take his place, a brother will replace a dead brother, a wife will replace murdered husband" (both -1939), "Socialist industry and transport - labor reserves!" (1940).

During the war he made more than a hundred posters, several works in collaboration with his wife, artist Olga Burova. In 1941–1943, he participated in the production of the famous defense posters “TASS Windows” (“So that the enemies falter quickly, so that the lead blows grow” No. 522, “All forces to defeat the enemy” No. 529, No. 558, “Let us increase our glory” No. 582 , No. 622, “Sailors will not let you down” No. 630, “Salute to the Heroes” No. 699, “Restoration Front No. 720,” “Death to the German occupiers!” No. 729, “Signalman” No. 751, No. 798).

Ivanov’s best war posters are distinguished by their journalistic passion and specific presentation of the topic. With their piercing emotionality, sharp characters, and sometimes tragic perception of reality, his posters do not leave the viewer indifferent: “Every milestone is decisive!” (1942), "Death to child killers!" (1942; co-authored with O.K. Burova), “All hope is in you, Red Warrior!”, “Avenge the grief of the people!”, “Every bullet hits a German!”, “Fighter of the Red Army! Take revenge on the monsters for the torment of your comrade!” (all -1943), “The hour of reckoning with the Germans for all their atrocities is near! Death to the fascists - child killers! (1944), Viktor Ivanov’s war posters are close to the works of his colleague and friend, another remarkable artist Alexei Kokorekin. The works of these outstanding poster artists are technically solved using similar pictorial means. Ivanov’s posters are more reminiscent of wartime genre paintings, but due to their greater brevity, including the color scheme, they still remain posters.

The most famous military posters: “For the Motherland, for honor, for freedom!” (1941), “The Motherland ordered me to study military affairs!” (1941), “Let’s increase our glory”, “Strike, stab, drive, take to the full!”, “Forward! To the West!”, “Long live the united front of freedom-loving peoples against the fascist invaders!”, “Comrade Red Army men and Red Navy men, commanders and political workers, partisans and partisans! The whole world looks at you as a force capable of destroying the predatory hordes of German invaders” (all – 1942), “We drink the water of our native Dnieper, we will drink from the Prut, Neman and Bug!” (1943), “You gave us life back!” (1943), “To the advanced collective farms - front-line thanks!” (1944), “Collective farmers! Restoring roads and bridges is our duty to our homeland!” (1944), “Let’s hoist the banner of victory over Berlin!”, “So it will be!”, “The enemy is insidious - be on alert!”, “Days and nights we are waiting for you, fighter!”, “Forward - to complete victory” , “Glory to the victorious heroic army!”, “Liberated Soviet people! You are freed from the oppression of fascist bondage - return to your homeland as soon as possible!”, “Thank you to Stalin!”, “We won!” (all -1945), “They returned their happiness!” (1946).

In the post-war years, he continued to work successfully as a poster artist, creating posters on topics of politics, industry and sports. His posters were published in the publishing houses IZOGIZ, “Soviet Artist” and “Iskusstvo”.
