This stone knife/sheath is an example of a man’s knife that would’ve been used before the white man came. The blade is chert and the handle is ash from the local area, the sheath is rawhide sewn with a strip of wet rawhide. The blade is secured in the handle with pitch and charcoal glue and then wrapped with wet sinew. Handle is lightly burned for a nice old fashioned look. When dry I coat this with a little waterproof sealer to make it resistant to water. I painted it with mineral paints I made from red ochre and a yellow stone I find locally (probably limonite “yellow ochre”) the black is manganese dioxide ore and these are mixed with a binder and painted on with a strip of yucca leaf like they did centuries ago. About as authentic as you can get and fully functional-works well for skinning and dressing game. This knife cuts with a sawing motion, you NEVER pry with it.
