Joseph Sankey & Sons Ltd produced a great variety of metalwork at Bilston, Wolverhampton (in The Black Country) in the 19th and 20th centuries. Betwen 1890 and 1932 they were particularly well-known for copper and brassware.

One of their signature products was a range of copper jugs and pitchers in arts and crafts and art nouveau styles, though they also made matching tankards, crumb trays, salvers, tea caddies. and candleholders.

The jug for sale is a striking example of one of their larger (4 pint capacity) Art Nouveau lidded copper water-jugs bearing the JS&S.B impress on the base.  Crafted to an excellent standard in high quality metal in 1904, it features their trademark tulip design, with intricate detailing and a charmingly rustic feel.  The lid has a domed top which has a planished finish.  The lid is hinged and has a thumb lift which is riveted, as is the "squared-off" or "7 style" handle.

Stamped on the base are the following characteristic marks:
JS&S.B         (Joseph Sankey & Sons Bilston)
Rd 409942    (Registered design number 409942 - indicating a production date of 1904)
4                   (Indicating the size - 4 pint capacity.

An ideal for any lover of Art Nouveau or collector of antique metalware, it would make a wonderful addition to any home, adding a touch of history and character to the décor.
