On 23/07/1916, the 7th Battalion were attacking the Switch Line at High Wood.

"B" and "C" companies started their attack at 12.20 am on the morning of the 23rd and reached their objectives, although they suffered heavy casualties.

The history records that "C" company was now only forty five men strong. They then advanced again but were held up by machine gun fire. Lt. Porter of "C" reported that his company had incurred heavy losses, that his men had advanced to within two yards of the Germn trench but could gert no further.
