A superb quality carved figure of a fisherman, the smooth fine grained timber with rich conker brown colour indicates boxwood.  This has allowed for an exceptional level of fine detail particularly in the hair and topknot, fish scales and basketweave, also tiny teeth.  The drape and movement of the robe is very skilfully observed.  The stand is ebonised and takes the form of rockwork with pine branches.  The eyes are made from bone or possibly glass, please note that the figure has only one applied eye.  The base has a simple maker's mark - please see photos.  To the untutored eye the exact country of origin is unclear, this type of figure seems to be attributed to both Chinese and Japanese craftsmen, however my first assumption was Japanese origin.   The age is most likely early to mid 20thC.

Size; 21.5cm high. Base; 9.5cm x 8cm.

Condition;  Condition is very good indeed with just a few light scuffs and dusty deposits within the very fine details commensurate with age. There is a fine split travelling up the back of the figure behind the left sleeve (photo 7).  The stand has some minor rubbing to the bottom edge, mentioned for accuracy.  The aforementioned single bone/glass eye is possibly a loss although not particularly disfiguring - please see photos.
