Description

Up for Consideration is a Extremely Rare Original Late 18th Century Revolutionary War Era London Made, Modified French Painted & Tarred Naval Cocked Hat

c1770-1790
Incredibly scarce original late 18th Century (c.1770-90) French Naval Cocked (Tricorn) Hat. Originally made in England by a fine London hat maker. Designed with a more squared sides which would eventually transition into the Bicorn style hat. Crafted in black Beaver fur, black dyed Silk Satin and leather for Military service in the late 1770s-80s. Modified probably in the 1790's by a French Naval Officer or Privateer, waterproofing it in tar and a thin layer of oilcloth, adding hand panted French colors on the back and a red painted trim on the cockaide button (This Cocked hat would have originally been all black). Fully lined in black satin with London makers name and possibly the name of the original owner in very hard to read gilt stencil. Fair to good condition with wear commensurate with age and use. overall intact. Very solid piece with a hard leather cap and sides which differ from the all felt cocked hats and very similar in construction to the solid 18th century tarred artillery liners. This would have been custom made and quite expensive at the time. Condition: Modified from original design, trim has area of loss, paints has chipped or rubbing in areas, minor cracks and splits. Original silk satin trim at base of outer cap. Inner sweat band is original but painted over with black tar paint (Probably Aqua color originally). Black Satin lining is in-tacked with sewing repairs right on areas of the makers name. Original front black silk satin ribbons are about 85%. Please note photos as they are an important part of the description.

*We strive to give an accurate description of all our artifacts, but there is often times we have a very unique piece such as this and to make a structured guess from specific details of the piece. We acquired this many years ago from a Huge Revolutionary War Military Collection in Vermont, once owned by a very well-known collector. The inventory tags indicating that this was a British or French Naval Tricorn. Again we have nothing to compare this too as this being pretty much a one of a kind piece.
