Mid-Century 1950’s Plitcha Elephant Trunk Raised

This lovely porcelain figurine depicts a large elephant with his trunk raised decorated with red clover and with hand painted detail.

The elephant is a creation by Plichta (Wemyss) from the mid-20th century, making it a rare and unique collectable item.

Jan Plichta was a Czech immigrant and wholesaler living and working in London. He never manufactured or decorated pottery but he bought largely unmarked Wemyss Ware in bulk from Bovey and had this stock marked either ‘Plichta,’ ‘Plichta, London, England’ or ‘Plichta, London, Made in England’ stamped under the glaze.

This large elephant 18cm long and stands 20cm tall.

He is in good condition with no chips or cracks, just some age related crazing which is common in this type of pottery. He even has both his tusks which so often get broken.
