Jawoyn plants and animals records the traditional Jawoyn names and uses of almost 600 plants and animals found on Jawoyn country.

It has been prepared at the instigation of Jawoyn elders as a critical component of joint management of country and the conservation of traditional knowledge.

It draws on ancient wisdom and is based on field research undertaken since the mid 1970's by Jawoyn elders, linguists and biologists.

....publications such as Jawoyn plants and animals are so important to us. Although our knowledge has traditionally been carried orally - through stories and songs - this book affirms at least part of the total of Jawoyn knowledge in written form. As well as being important to our children and grandchildren, this knowledge can now be explored by the many Mam who now live in or visit Jawoyn country. Robert Lee (Executive Officer, Jawoyn Association)

... through language, there are other ways of seeing and understanding country. Jawoyn plants and animals is more than a listing of names and descriptions of flora and fauna, and their place in the environment. It is a book that can help people visiting Jawoyn lands look at country through different eyes. John Ah Kit, former MLA (Arnhem)

The production of this book has been undertaken by Jawoyn elders, the Ethnobiology Project (NRETA), the Jawoyn Association, the Parks and Wildlife Service, the Diwurruwurru-jaru Aboriginal Corporation and the Australian National University.
