Frances (Fanny) Kemble was a popular English actor. She married into a wealthy family of Georgia plantation owners, and the conditions of slavery that she witnessed there at first hand caused her to become an ardent abolitionist. Her memoirs, consisting of her letters and comments thereon, are a window into a period of social and political transformation in American history.
