Artist's Statement:
This is an original drawing from the personal collection of 77-year-old naïve/outsider artist, Bruce W. Hall. Of his sometimes whimsical, occasionally disturbing images, he says: “After 25 years as a fine art photographer, I decided to put away the camera and address a long-standing interest in other visual, creative mediums. I wanted to evolve, artistically. After much exploration I decided to embrace that which is ‘rich in the tradition of the sketch.’ At first it was a tentative, unsure, and rather private kind of thing. But there was willingness, eagerness, and determination to see where the work might take me if I persisted.

“My approach to drawing is heuristic. I ‘draw small’ for intimacy and economy with simple lines and elementary color. I frequently omit backgrounds to eliminate distraction from my characters ‘personality’ as they face the viewer directly. Anatomical correctness is not a prerequisite nor is deconstruction a technical priority. However, some conceptual influences are predicated upon a keen, decades-old, interest in mid-twentieth century modern art.

"My goal is to create a concise visual presence: pictorial impressions suggestive of human vanities and conceits. The intent is not to mock nor characterize people, but to draw simplified metaphoric versions artistically rendered from what has been described in Professor Robert Cole’s book, Omnibus as 'the complexities, ambiguities, ironies, and inconsistencies that make up human actuality'."
