Description:  It is an original vintage map from Antonin Becvar's Skalnate Pleso or Atlas of the Heavens 1950.0, Sky Publishing, Harvard Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts, a copy of the title page will be included for reference. It is being sold as a single loose map shown in the main pic photographed against a dark background, thus it is not mounted, matted nor framed. This is a particularly nice map for framing since it has no centerfold.

Antonin Becvar (1901-1965), was a Slovakian astronomer and founder of the Skalnate Pleso Observatory from where he produced the atlas which was first published in 1948 in Slovakia by the Academy and then by Sky Publishing from about 1950-1975. This map is from an 1958 edition, printed in black and white, typical of the atlas format in the 1950s. By 1961 the atlas was reintroduced with a color format, we have some of those listed as well, search "1961 Becvar." The atlas was very unique, compiling for the first time the accurate positions of all stellar (stars) and nonstellar (galaxies, star clusters, nebula, etc.) objects down to a magnitude of 7.75, basically everything that can be seen in an 8 inch telescope. It was a wealth of data for both the amateur comet hunters and professional astonomers and remained the state of the art reference until it was outdated by Tirion's Sky Atlas 2000.0 in 1981.

Size: The entire page measures approximately 12x18 inches (30x45cm) with a margin all around for framing as seen in the pic.

Condition: The map is in Very Good condition, blank on the reverse, flat with no centerfold. Other than a couple of slightly bumped corners, it is very clean and well preserved, printed on heavy paper. The pics are of the actual map.
