This is a late 18th. century antique Whieldon type Staffordshire Creamware, tortoiseshell spongeware oval platter with light green spot decoration, front and back. Very good condition given its age. This large, 14" long platter had a home made thick copper wire hanger attached when I got it and although hangers are not particularly helpful when it comes to the plate edges, it has probably saved it from serious damage by being hung up on a wall for many years gathering dust and grime. As a result, the platter has a decent ring when tapped and very little by way of damage. As was typical for the time, some edge chips on this platter were decorated and glazed over as I have shown in the pictures. There are two very old, shallow edge chips which only show if you look directly at the edge and there is a small star crack in the middle of the base which can't be noticed from the front.  This is a good piece!! There is more green decoration than first meets the eye and if you look closely you can see there are dots all around both the outer and the inner rim, as well as on the back.
A rare survivor!!
