Hedgehog
Middle Kingdom, Dynasty 12, about 1800 B.C.
Ägyptisches Museum Berlin Staatl. Museen
Preußischer Kulturbesitz Inv. no. 10250, faience, length 9 cm.

During the Middle Kingdom miniature faience animal figures were placed in the grave with the deceased.
The hedgehog is known already from prehistoric representations
and later from tomb walls where he appears as game.
In the form of small amulets or seals, he symbolized rebirth.
Perhaps figures such as this charming hedgehog are a combination of both purposes.
