Basil Ziani De Ferranti was born on 2.7.1891, in Hampstead. The son of Sebastian Ziani de Ferranti and his wife Gertrude Ruth De Ferranti. He was educated at Heddon Court, Hamstead 1900-1907; at Repton School from 1907 - 1908 and The University of Sheffield from Sept 1908. He did a 2 year course there in mechanical engineering. In May 1911 he was apprenticed to Messrs Yarrow & Co Ltd., Shipbuilders, Glasgow. In March 1912 he became a Pupil Fitter at Messrs Vickers Ltd, Sheffield. In 1914 he was appointed as assistant to his father at the Don Valley Works, Sheffield. He enlisted after the Outbreak of War and was commissioned as a 2/Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery on 2.10.1914. Then posted to the 21st Siege Battery operating 9.2 Howitzers. Proceeded with the Unit to France on 27.5.1915. Awarded a Military Cross on 3.6.1916. Seriously wounded at Carnoy on 18.8.1916, whilst at his battery position. He re-joined the unit on 21.9.1916. On the morning of 24.6.1917 whilst in camp and asleep in his canvas hut, he was severely wounded from a direct hit from German Artillery. Evacuated to Wimereux and died of wounds on 12.7.1917.
