The nón (conical palm-leaf hat), first made famous in central (Hue) region, has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Vietnamese culture, along with the áo dài (women's long split tunic worn over loose-fitting pants).

Each hat is made by

hand: palm leaves softened by exposure to one night's dew are stitched onto a frame of 16-18 thin bamboo rings, then covered in embossed silk and decorated with silk cording.
