Andrew Murray
(9 May 1828 - 18 January 1917)

Born in Graaff Reinet, South Africa, Andrew grew up in a home filled with prayer and worship where his father, the Rev. Andrew Murray Sr., was ministering to Dutch settlers. At the age of 10 he was sent to school in Scotland and after college he went to Holland to study theology. As a result of the teachings of his father, his uncle (the Rev. John Murray), and many others he met during his schooling, the young man developed a very strong foundation of faith, prayer, worship, love for the lost, and above all the attitude that Jesus Christ should be the center of our attention. Ordained at the age of 20, Andrew returned to South Africa and started ministering to the Dutch farmers. In 1860 he became the pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church at Worcester.  Later he would be part of the Keswick Movement and the minister of the Dutch Reformed Church of Wellington from 1871 to 1906 Murray considered missions "the chief end of the church." In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day.

Absolute Surrender and Other Addresses (1890)(Playing Time: 3hrs 49mins)

This is a series of short messages written by the South African minister, Andrew Murray.  They deal with the necessity and joy of surrendering our lives completely to God. (Summary written by Joy Chan)

Humility: The Beauty of Holiness (1890)(Playing Time: 2hrs 03mins)

A book on the all importance of humility, how Jesus was humble, and how we also can become humble. Murray wrote “Without humility, there can be no true abiding in God’s presence or experience of His favour and the power of His spirit. Without it there can be no abiding faith or love or joy or strength.”

The Deeper Christian Life (1890)(Playing Time: 2hrs 36mins)

If you were put on trial for being a Christian, would you be convicted? Christians have asked themselves this question, or ones like it, for millennia. In his book, The Deeper Christian Life, Andrew Murray helps us come to grips with those nagging insecurities in our Christian walk. A shallow relationship with God leads us down a road of doubt and insecurities. Can I be forgiven? How can I forgive? Murray tells us that we can

The Lord's Table (1890)(Playing Time: 2hrs 38mins)

This book talks about communion with God and how to prepare yourself to take communion. Has a week of devotions and prayers at end of each devotion. Recommend for those that want to understand what communion is all about and why we should take it. God has prepared a table for us to eat at.

The School of Obedience (1890)(Playing Time: 2hrs 33mins)

Andrew Murray describes the necessity and benefits of absolute obedience to God. He goes on to explain the way to achieve this level of obedience, which is required of all believers, and attainable through God’s provision.

The True Vine (1890)(Playing Time: 2hrs 31mins)

This simple work is written in such a way as to make God's Word clear to anyone who would listen. Andrew Murray was able to reach the young and underprivileged of his day with his straightforward preaching and writing. And as he lived, fully abiding in the Lord, so these words of Christ are made clear for another century.

With Christ in the School of Prayer (1890)(Playing Time: 7hrs 40mins)

It is under a deep impression that the place and power of prayer in the Christian life is too little understood, that this book has been written. I feel sure that as long as we look on prayer chiefly as the means of maintaining our own Christian life, we shall not know fully what it is meant to be. But when we learn to regard it as the highest part of the work entrusted to us, the root and strength of all other work, we shall see that there is nothing that we so need to study and practise as the art of praying aright..the Father waits to hear every prayer of faith, to give us whatsoever we will, and whatsoever we ask in Jesus’ name.
