An early map of the US showing an enlarged New California which was still part of Mexcio and extending into Arizona, parts of New Mexico and Utah. Texas is shown as a state (Dec. 29, 1845) and has the characteristic stovepipe shape extending into New Mexico and up into current day Colorado. The map also shows Missouri, Oregon and Indian Territories, as well as strange shaped Iowa and Wisconsin, both of which includes parts of current day Minnesota. Alaska is shown as part of Russia and Canada is confined to Ontario and Quebec, with the rest of Canada labeled as Hundson Bay Lands and the Northwest Territory along the Pacific coast.
Description: It is an original copperplate antique map approximately 177 years old with embossed plate marks around the margins, blank on reverse, with original hand color outlining. This is from an enlarged edition with no centerfold, making it great for framing. It is from a circa 1849 Stieler's Hand Atlas, published in Gotha by Justus Perthes, a copy of the title page is included. The map is dated 1848 in the title area along with the name of the German cartographer Friedrich von Stulpnagel, who worked closely with Stieler and designed many of the maps for his atlases. Stieler's Hand Atlas appears in the top right margin. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed being sold as a single map as seen in the first pic.
Size: The map area measures approximately 12 by 15 inches (30x38cm) on a 14 by 17 1/2" page (37x45cm)
Condition: Good condition, blank on reverse, embossed plate marks in margins, printed on heavy cotton paper with strong original hand color outlining as issued. There is a faint dampstain in the bottom right and some very minor handling smudges in the margin, otherwise it is very clean with strong original hand coloring with a nice antique appearance that would frame up well, see the pics.
