Each word has been removed from a handwritten legal summary Hamilton wrote in March of 1797. The case was tried in the Circuit Court for the City and County of New York. Hamilton was defense counsel for Samuel Falkenham and William Wilmerding against the complaint of James Todd that the defendants failed to honor a promissory note. Just a few short months later Hamilton would become embroiled in the Reynolds affair, the first major political sex scandal in America. Hamilton would also go on to publish his response to the affair accusations which infamously became known as "The Reynolds Pamphlet".

The cost of authenticating a single word of Hamilton's handwriting is $200 on PSA's website.
