Commentary: Senju is present-day Adachi Ward. It was once the starting point of the Oshu Kaido, a key transportation hub that connects to the Mito Kaido and the Nikko Kaido, and was famous as one of the Four Posts of Edo. Here, the scene of the post station is not depicted, but the area next to the Arakawa Water Gate, which is a little far upstream of the Sumida River. Fuji is deliberately placed between the rhythmic pillars of the water gate, adding a twist to the composition. It is also interesting to note that the horse's body, with its head bowed in a mountainous shape, resembles the figure of Mt. Fuji.
