About the author
Kyoichi Sawada
Born in 1936 in Teramachi, Aomori City. In July 1945, at the age of 9, he experienced an air raid on Aomori by the US military bomber B29. August 15th, the end of the war. In 1951, at Aomori High School, became a classmate with Shuji Terayama. In 1955, he got a job at Kojima Photo Studio in Misawa Base, met Sata, and got married the following year. In 1961, moved to Tokyo with his wife Sata and got a job at UPI News Agency. In 1965, the US military began bombing North Vietnam and intervened in the Vietnam War in earnest. This year, Sawada personally covered the Vietnamese front, and six months later he was officially assigned to the Saigon branch of the UPI news agency as a cameraman. In December of that year, he won the 9th World Press Photo Exhibition Grand Prize for "Escape to Safety". In 1966, he received the Pulitzer Prize (news photography category) for 28 photographs including "Escape to Safety". Since then, he has won numerous awards for "death covered with mud" and "take an enemy". do. He was shot dead on the Cambodian front in 1970.
