In 1962 Cino Cinelli partnered up with a plastics manufacturer, Nieddu, to produce the world’s first plastic-shell bicycle saddle. The rock-hard, plastic Unicantor was not well received. Then one day British cycling legend Tom Simpson glued sheets of suede to one and brought it to the attention of Cinelli at a race. Legend says that soon there was a saddle-quality leather shortage in Italy because of the demand for leather-covered Unicator saddles.
