THE EXPLORATION OF THE WORLD FAMOUS TRAVELS AND TRAVELLERS
Written by Jules Verne and translated by Dora Leigh. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York. This a later edition of one of Verne’s few nonfiction works. It follows the first illustrated American edition (Scribner, 1879). It is from Scribner’s Uniform Edition of Verne’s works which first appeared in 1886. Most of these uniform editions were in red or brown covers and usually had fewer illustrations. This one is in a red cover and is fully illustrated with well over 100 full page illustration plates.
FAMOUS TRAVELS AND TRAVELLERS, originally titled Histoire des Grand Voyages et des Grand Voyageurs is Jules Verne’s nonfiction history of mostly European explorers from before the time of Christ up to about the beginning of the 18th century. It was part of a three volume history of exploration—the other two volumes were histories of 18th century exploration (V2) and 19th century exploration (V3). Each volume stands alone, and they are not noted as a separate numbered volumes by in the uniform editions by Scribner.

CONDITION:
This hard-cover book is in very good condition. It has been rebound and recased into its original cover. The red cloth is mildly soiled and worn at the corners. The spine is a bit darkened with the gilt rubbed. The fraying at the spine ends have been repaired with matching cloth. The inner hinges are done with black book cloth. There is an engraved name card affixed to the front pastedown. The interior is otherwise nice, with occasional smudging, but no names, marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is a bit toned with age. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages.
