On the Old West Coast: Being the Further Reminiscences of a Ranger, Major Horace Bell. Edited by Lanier Bartlett.  Published in 1930 by Grosset & Dunlap of New York.

Born in Indiana in 1830, Bell settled in Los Angeles in 1852.  He was a founding member of the Los Angeles Rangers, the first specific Los Angeles police force, and a member of Walker's Filibusters in Nicaragua ( The Filibuster War or Walker affair was a military conflict between filibustering multinational troops stationed in Nicaragua and a coalition of Central American armies. An American mercenary, William Walker, invaded Nicaragua in 1855 with a small private army. He seized control of the country by 1856, but was ousted the following year.) Howard was also a lawyer, journalist and newspaper publisher, and author of two Southern California history books.   He died in 1919.  His first book
Reminiscences of a Ranger: Early Times in Southern California was published in 1881.  It is a classic account  of the “seamy” side of 19th century Los Angeles.  On the Old West Coast, published posthumously in 1930, is based on his notes and expands on the theme.
