From a collection near Montargis, is this fine early 19th century portrait drawing, part of a small folio of 18th/19th century portrait drawings by different artists.
The
drawing, executed in pen, ink, gray wash and watercolors on early 19th century paper,
depicts a portrait of a man, identified (bottom "Zschokke") as the writer Johann Heinrich Daniel Zschokke (at the age of ca. 30/35 when he allready lived in Switzerland).
JOHANN HEINRICH DANIEL ZSCHOKKE (Magdeburg 1771 - Aarau, Switzerland, 1848) : German, later Swiss, author and reformer. Most of his life
was spent, and most of his reputation earned, in Switzerland. He had an
extensive civil service career, and wrote histories, fiction and other
works which were widely known.
