A pair of children's ankle socks, made in 1953 to celebrate the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second.

These were made for small children - foot size 6 inches (note: this is not the same as shoe size).  Roughly age 3.

Made in Britain by Silquesta. The socks are a creamy-white colour.

The tops of the socks (the turn-down part) are decorated with a Royal Crown and ER (short for Elizabeth Regina), in a wreath of laurel.

Altogether a charming little bit of social history - and quite unusually with vintage clothing, a garment which can be definitely dated to a particular year.

Condition:

New and unused.  They have been in storage in a shop since 1953, and they are still tacked together at the back of the ankle, with a 1950s price tag stapled to one sock.  This price is 1/3 (one shilling and three pence).  The socks have kept their colour well, but there are a few faint marks from storage - and some small spots where the staples have rusted.  Obviously, these socks are around 70 years old, and not suitable for actual wearing, but they would make a nice little addition to a historical clothing or royal souvenir collection.
